All People's Garden, Inc.

This garden was created in 1978 by former VISTA volunteer Olean For in an effort to unite her block against heavy drug trafficking in her neighborhood. Olean turned around the lives of many youth with her Boys and Girls club. The first PLANT - A-LOT (PAL) site to open in 1979 with Liz Christy and Mayor Ed Koch planting a ceremonial rose bush to grow over the garden gate, is now a Manhattan Land Trust community garden. With a generous grant from Evan Frankel Foundation, PAL completed a garden renovation in 2003. Original garden elements were restored including, the stage-seating area, open plaza, bbq patio, tool shed, and pathways with new brick pavers. A new mural and gazebo were added. Ms. For passed away in May, 2004. She truly succeeded in creating an environment for All People to enjoy nature and be closer to God.
