The mission of Anathoth Community Garden is taken from the book of Jeremiah, to "plant gardens and eat what they produce," and to "seek the peace of the city." (Jer.29:5,7). We believe that planting gardens and seeking peace are symbiotic activities, like planting marigolds with your tomatoes. By inviting diverse community members to grow and eat food together, we believe this will do more to create peace in our community than any amount of protesting, voting, or congressional lobbying could achieve. Here's how our garden works: When members join they pay five dollars for the entire year; they agree to work two hours a week on one of our three workdays. In turn, they receive a share of the weekly harvesteverything from arugula to Zapotec tomatoesfrom April through November. We advertise by word of mouth. Though we seek out migrant and low-income families, anyone can join. After only two years we have 80 members, with around 30-40 folks coming at least once a week. The bi-weekly potlucks every Tues. at 6pm and Sat. at noon are a chance for people to get to know their neighbors. We are a host site for community service volunteers, and also host conferences on food and faith. Several times a year we offer how-to classes in organic gardening and a bible study called "Just Eating" that examine food practices. In short, we see the garden as both metaphor and locale for seeking the peace of Cedar Grove. We invite you to visit.
