Welcome to 'Inspiration'! This garden, located at the Abilities Resource Center in Vero Beach, FL has a greenhouse and large site for planting beds for vegetables and herbs. Raised planting beds are being constructed for wheelchair access. Clients and volunteers at ARC are germinating plants from seed and then planting in designated areas. Harvested vegetables and herbs are to be used for consumption by the clients in their kitchen. Some plants have also been sold at local farmer's market. Donations have been made for tools, seeds, and truck loads of topsoil. Garden also has a linear planting bed backed by a fence for vertical planting and flower beds for cutting. The linear beds are being measured and defined so that each area will contain different plants (some native) and trees. The garden is being developed by Circles of the Garden Club of Indian River County, Inc. (a member of the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc. and National Garden Clubs) with the assistance of the ARC clients, who are physically and mentally challenged adults, and other volunteers and service organizations from within the community. It is an intergenerational community garden that is all about people.
This unique partnership within the community allows over 150 challenged adults to be part of the expanding landscape and feel a sense of ownership. With the development of various programs clients and volunteeers will learn about organic gardening and water conservation (a must in Florida) . Garden will also be used as a horticultural teaching tool for youth groups (Boy Scouts, 4H groups etc.), Master Gardeners, and other community organizations now are able to have the opportunity to work with challenged individuals and discover their similar "abilities" in the garden, not their differences. We call this garden 'Inspiration" because it is meant to inspire and grow understanding, learning, and respect for all who pass through the garden gate. It is aimed at cultivating not only the earth, but education in nutrition, and conservation, as well as the human spirit. This Community PEP Garden - Productive...Educational...and Pretty will be therapy for everyone involved.
