Anacortes Community Gardens (ACG) is sponsored by the City of Anacortes Parks & Recreation Department in partnership with the 501c3 non-profit group Transition Fidalgo & Friends (formerly Skagit Beat the Heat). ACG provides: Year-round garden plots in a fenced area with water, storage shed, some shared tools. Other amenities include a Porta-potty, shared compost area, food bank plots, children’s garden plots, garden mentors and how-to workshops. In Spring 2010, five ADA-accessible raised beds were added for seniors and gardeners with physical limitations with support from community donors and volunteers from AmeriCorps and Kiwanis Sunrisers of Anacortes. A second community/school garden is under construction and will open in 2012 in partnership with Mt. Erie Elementary School. This garden will serve teachers, students and their family, and include community plots. Gardeners provide: Personal gardening tools, soil amendments, seeds or plant starts, elbow grease, enthusiasm, and the willingness to expand your gardening knowledge. Other 2010 additions to the garden include a small demonstration orchard at the 29th Street Garden maintained by the Western Washington Fruit Research Foundation and a bioswale to capture water from a nearby parking lot. Supporting local food banks: Each of our gardens have designated food bank plots that are cultivated specifically to grow food for the local Anacortes 100 and Salvation Army food banks. All gardeners are encouraged to donate extra produce to local food banks either themselves or in partnership with the food bank gardeners. In 2010, the 29th Street Garden provided over 250 pounds of fresh produce to our local food banks, which increased to over 550 pounds in 2011.
